Wide-Area Fleet Radio That Covers the Miles Between Towers

Fleet radio is not the same problem as site radio. A warehouse radio system works within a defined footprint. A fleet radio system has to work wherever the vehicle goes, which often means rural highway stretches with no cell coverage, remote loading facilities with no repeater infrastructure, and multi-state routes where no single carrier or radio system covers the full path. VEI has designed wide-area fleet radio systems for transportation operators who have already discovered that cell phones and consumer walkie-talkies do not hold up to the operational demands of a commercial fleet. The economic case for radio over cellular in large fleets is straightforward. A PTT-capable radio with a monthly service fee on a wide-area network costs a fraction of the per-unit cellular cost for a fleet of 50 or more vehicles. More importantly, radio provides simultaneous group communication that cellular push-to-talk cannot reliably replicate at scale. When a dispatcher needs to reach 30 drivers at once, radio does it in two seconds. A group text message thread is not a substitute for dispatch radio, and fleet managers who have tried it know exactly why. VEI also addresses the safety side of fleet radio, specifically man-down and lone-worker features for drivers who make stops at remote or unsecured locations. Modern digital portable radios from Motorola and Kenwood include tilt-sensor and timer-based man-down alerts that notify dispatch if a driver stops moving or fails to check in on schedule. We program and test these features as part of every fleet radio deployment rather than leaving them as optional settings nobody configures.
