School Radio Systems Built for Lockdowns, Not Just Logistics

Most school radio systems were designed for facilities and maintenance coordination. They were not designed for a lockdown, an evacuation, or a medical emergency in a portable classroom at the back of a campus. When those events happen, which they do, security directors discover that the two-way radios their staff carry are not reaching the field house or the lower level of the parking garage, and that their security channel is sharing a repeater with the grounds crew talking about irrigation schedules. These are not exotic failure scenarios. They are the direct result of systems built for one purpose being asked to do another. VEI approaches school communications from a safety-first design standard. That means a coverage system that reaches every occupied space on campus, dedicated secure channels for security and administration separate from facilities and transportation, and radios programmed with emergency button functions that alert dispatch or a central monitoring station. For K-12 districts, we also address bus fleet radio coverage, which frequently drops out on rural routes where drivers have no way to report an incident until they are back in range of a tower. Universities present a different scale problem. A large campus may span dozens of buildings, multiple parking structures, and several square miles of grounds, often with multiple departments each operating their own radio systems. VEI has the RF engineering capability to design systems at that scale, including distributed antenna systems for large buildings, multi-site repeater networks, and trunked systems for campuses that need 10 or more simultaneous talk groups across security, facilities, transportation, housing, and events.
