Viking VP8000
The Viking VP8000 is the flagship Viking portable: multi-band VHF, UHF, and 700/800 MHz in one device, with P25 Phase 1, Phase 2, and DMR alongside FM Analog. Wi-Fi 2.4/5 GHz enables over-the-internet programming for large fleet management without physical radio access. AES-256, OTAR, GPS, Bluetooth, and FIRESafe fire ground accountability are all standard.
Overview
Large agencies and statewide operations face a specific challenge: officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel routinely respond to incidents where the other agencies present are on different systems. P25 Phase 2 on the county system, P25 Phase 1 on mutual aid, and DMR on commercial networks for specific applications. Carrying two radios is a common workaround. The VP8000 eliminates the need.
The VP8000 covers VHF (136-174 MHz, 6 W), UHF (380-520 MHz, 5 W), and 700/800 MHz (763-776 and 851-870 MHz, 3 W) simultaneously. Supported protocols include P25 Phase 1 and Phase 2 trunking, DMR, Viking16 with SmartNet and SmartZone compatibility, and FM Analog. Simultaneous multi-band scanning monitors all bands at once. Channel capacity starts at 1,024 and expands to 2,048 or 4,096 for large statewide or multi-agency zone configurations. Dimensions are 5.91 x 3.04 x 1.73 inches with the KNB-L2 2,600 mAh battery at 18.7 oz.
Wi-Fi 2.4 and 5 GHz (802.11a/b/g/n/ac) enables over-the-internet programming without physically connecting each radio, which cuts update time significantly for fleet updates across hundreds of units. FIRESafe compatibility supports fire department accountability programs. AES-256 FIPS 140-2 and OTAR are standard. TrueVoice noise cancellation and a full-color top LCD with flip orientation for holster viewing complete the package. MIL-STD-810 C through H and IP67/68 cover the environmental requirements.

Multi-Band Simultaneous Scanning
VHF, UHF, and 700/800 MHz channels scan simultaneously in a single radio, displaying activity across all bands on the top LCD. This is operationally equivalent to carrying three single-band radios but in one device at one weight. For command staff and task force personnel monitoring multiple systems, this is the primary reason to select the VP8000.
P25 Phase 1/2 and DMR
P25 Phase 1 and Phase 2 trunking covers public safety networks. DMR adds commercial and hybrid network compatibility for agencies bridging public safety and commercial infrastructure. Viking16 provides SmartNet and SmartZone compatibility. Any combination of protocols can be assigned per zone and channel.
Wi-Fi Over-the-Internet Programming
802.11a/b/g/n/ac dual-band Wi-Fi enables over-the-internet programming (OTIP) without physical cable connections. For an agency managing hundreds of radios across multiple facilities or vehicles, pushing a channel update or configuration change over Wi-Fi eliminates the logistics of collecting, connecting, and returning each radio manually.
AES-256 FIPS 140-2 and OTAR
AES-256 FIPS 140-2 single and multi-key encryption is standard. OTAR handles key management across large fleets remotely, critical for agencies where manual rekeying hundreds of radios after a key compromise is operationally impossible. ARC4 (Motorola ADP compatible) and DES-OFB are also supported.
FIRESafe Integration
FIRESafe Fire Ground Commander and First Responder compatibility supports fire department personnel accountability programs at incident scenes. This is a built-in capability, not a third-party adapter, enabling incident commanders to track personnel status directly through the radio system without additional hardware.
Full-Color Top LCD with Holster Flip
The full-color top-panel LCD displays channel, zone, and status information readable from a holster or chest use without removing the radio. Display flip orientation rotates the screen for the viewing angle when the radio is clipped vertically. Eight selectable color themes support day and night operation preferences.
