Viking VP5000
The Viking VP5000 is a compact P25 Phase 1 and Phase 2 portable under 5.5 inches tall, covering VHF, UHF, and 700/800 MHz in a single device. AES-256 FIPS 140-2 encryption, OTAR, built-in GPS, Bluetooth, TrueVoice noise cancellation, and IP67 are standard features, not upgrades. It works on ATLAS P25, Motorola Astro 25, Harris VIDA, and Airbus VESTA networks without modification.
Overview
Law enforcement and first responders often carry their radio all day on patrol, in plainclothes details, or in confined spaces where bulk matters. A radio that requires an external GPS module, a separate Bluetooth adapter, or a paid encryption upgrade adds weight and cost without improving capability. The VP5000 is built from the ground up to include those features without add-ons.
At 5.47 x 2.28 x 1.56 inches with the standard KNB-L2M 2,600 mAh battery, the VP5000 is one of the smallest multi-band P25 portables available. Output power is 6 W on VHF (136-174 MHz), 5 W on UHF (380-520 MHz), and 3 W on 700/800 MHz (763-776 and 851-870 MHz). Channel capacity is 1,024 standard across 255 zones, with support for P25 Phase 1 and Phase 2 trunking, P25 Conventional, Viking16, and FM Analog. Mixed protocol zones allow analog and P25 channels in the same zone for agencies still supporting legacy users.
TrueVoice noise cancellation is software-based and works with all accessories without requiring dual-microphone hardware. AES-256 FIPS 140-2 encryption and over-the-air rekeying (OTAR) are standard. P25 Authentication prevents unauthorized radio access on the network. Built-in GPS provides situational awareness data. IP67 rating and MIL-STD-810 C through G certification cover drops, submersion, temperature extremes, and vibration. Eight display color themes and day/night modes support varied operational environments.
Key Features
P25 Phase 1 and Phase 2
Full P25 trunking support covers Phase 1 FDMA and Phase 2 TDMA, enabling participation on any P25 public safety network. Viking16 adds SmartNet and SmartZone compatibility for agencies with legacy Motorola trunking infrastructure. Mixed protocol zones allow P25 and FM analog channels to coexist in the same radio configuration.
AES-256 FIPS 140-2 and OTAR
AES-256 FIPS 140-2 single and multi-key encryption is standard. Over-the-air rekeying (OTAR) lets dispatch update encryption keys remotely without physical access to each radio, which is critical for large deployments where manual rekeying is operationally impractical. ARC4 encryption (Motorola ADP compatible) is also supported.
TrueVoice Noise Cancellation
TrueVoice is a software-based noise cancellation system that works with all Viking radio accessories without requiring dual-microphone hardware. It's included on every VP5000 at no additional cost. This matters for law enforcement and EMS environments where radio audio quality directly affects situational awareness.
Built-In GPS and Bluetooth
GPS is integrated into the radio body with an internal antenna, transmitting location data for AVL and situational awareness applications. Bluetooth is also built in, eliminating external adapters that add bulk and failure points. Both are included without an add-on purchase or accessory cradle.
IP67 and MIL-STD-810
IP67 submersion rating covers 30 minutes at 1 meter depth as a baseline, not a premium option. MIL-STD-810 C through G certification covers shock, vibration, salt fog, and temperature extremes. The radio is compatible with VK5000 and Motorola KVL3000/4000 keyloaders, and works on ATLAS P25, Motorola Astro 25, Harris VIDA, and Airbus VESTA networks.
