Viking VM5000
The Viking VM5000 is the entry point in Viking's P25 vehicle mobile line, covering VHF, UHF, and 700/800 MHz at up to 50 watts. TrueVoice noise cancellation, a full-color 422 x 154 pixel display with 140-degree viewing angle, AES-256 FIPS 140-2, OTAR, and built-in GPS are all standard. Multi-system interoperability spans ATLAS P25, Motorola Astro 25, Harris VIDA, and Airbus VESTA networks.
Overview
Patrol vehicles, fire apparatus, and EMS units need a mobile radio that participates fully in P25 networks without requiring additional modules for encryption, GPS, or noise cancellation. In many product lines those are paid upgrades. The VM5000 includes them by default.
The VM 5730 covers VHF at 136-174 MHz with 5-50 W output. The VM 5830 covers UHF at 380-520 MHz (Type 1: 5-45 W, Type 2: 5-40 W). The VM 5930 covers 700/800 MHz at 763-776 and 851-870 MHz at 2-30 W or 2-35 W. Channel capacity is 1,024 across 255 zones, with P25 Phase 1 and Phase 2 trunking, P25 Conventional, Viking16, and FM Analog. Conventional vote scan is built in for agencies using voting repeater networks.
The 422 x 154 pixel full-color LCD with 140-degree viewing angle accommodates angled dash mounts and non-standard console positions without losing readability. Built-in GPS transmits P25 AVL data without a separate data modem. AES-256 FIPS 140-2 encryption and OTAR are standard. TrueVoice handles engine noise and siren bleed-through on transmit. Remote mount via KCH-19 control head is optional, and dual remote control heads are supported for specialized vehicle configurations. The radio weighs 3.53 lbs at 6.73 x 1.89 x 6.93 inches.
Key Features
P25 Phase 1 and Phase 2 Trunking
Full P25 Phase 1 and Phase 2 participation on vehicle radio hardware with 50 W VHF output. Vote scan covers conventional voting repeater systems. P25 Authentication prevents unauthorized radio access on the network. Viking16 adds SmartNet and SmartZone compatibility for agencies with Motorola legacy trunking infrastructure.
140-Degree Viewing Angle Display
The 422 x 154 pixel full-color LCD is readable at 140 degrees off center, which matters for vehicle installations where the mounting angle isn't perfectly aligned with the operator's sightline. Eight selectable display themes and day/night modes let operators optimize visibility for their specific vehicle and shift conditions.
Built-In GPS with P25 AVL Data
Integrated GPS transmits location data in P25 AVL format without a separate data modem or hardware module. This is directly usable by dispatch CAD systems that support P25 location data, providing real-time vehicle tracking without third-party integration hardware installed in each vehicle.
AES-256 FIPS 140-2 Standard
AES-256 FIPS 140-2 encryption is included in the base radio, not a paid upgrade tier. OTAR handles key management for the fleet without physical radio access. ARC4 (Motorola ADP compatible) extends compatibility with agencies managing keys using older Motorola KVL3000 or KVL4000 keyloaders.
TrueVoice for Vehicle Environments
TrueVoice noise cancellation is software-based and standard on all VM5000 units. In vehicle environments where engine noise, siren audio, and wind noise compete with radio communications, TrueVoice suppresses background noise on transmit without requiring a noise-cancelling microphone accessory or dual-mic hardware.
Remote Mount and Dual Head Support
An optional KCH-19 remote control head separates the display and controls from the RF deck, useful for vehicles where trunk or console mounting is required. Dual remote control heads are supported for installations where two operators need access, such as command vehicles with separate driver and command positions.
